Hantavirus cluster linked to m/v Hondius cruise travel

Track the ship movements, case counts, and countries of exposed individuals.

Evolving situation: This tracker is an unofficial, source-linked visualization for situational awareness and education. The outbreak investigation is ongoing, source reports may change, and this page is not a substitute for guidance from public health agencies or clinical/public health authorities.

Case definitions

WHO/ECDC classification reference

Confirmed case: A person who meets the criteria above and has tested positive for Andes hantavirus in a laboratory test.

Probable case: A person who has the same symptoms as above and has had close contact with someone who is known or likely to have Andes hantavirus.

Inconclusive case: A person with conflicting or incomplete laboratory evidence while repeat testing is pending.

Suspected case: A person who has been on the same transport as someone with Andes hantavirus, and has a fever plus at least one of these symptoms: muscle aches, chills, headache, stomach problems (like nausea or diarrhoea) or breathing problems.

Genomic surveillance context

Andes virus public sequence dashboard

Phylogenetic context

Hondius Andes virus trees

Andes virus has a segmented RNA genome, so the small (S), medium (M), and large (L) genome segments are analyzed separately. All available outbreak sequences are very similar, consistent with a single source of exposure and subsequent spread within the ship, though genomics alone cannot resolve transmission pathways. This interpretation is described in a preliminary analysis posted to virological.org. For more information on how to interpret phylogenetic trees like the ones seen below, see the Applied Genomic Epidemiology Handbook section on phylogenetic trees.

Some data in this build may be RESTRICTED-USE - meaning its use in preprints or publications is restricted. Please see the Pathoplexus Data Use Terms for more details.

Trees are embedded from full Nextstrain build using the Hodcroft Lab Andes virus segment trees. We gratefully acknowledge Emma Hodcroft, EVE Group: Swiss TPH, University of Basel, Neherlab: Biozentrum, University of Basel and the Pathoplexus Team for creating and maintaining the Nextstrain builds embedded here, as well as nextstrain.org.

How to read this tracker

This page is a public-facing visualization built from curated source snapshots, not an official case line list. Counts may differ across official updates because definitions, report dates, and laboratory confirmations are changing. When sources differ, WHO/ECDC/public health agency updates are prioritized over media reporting.

Case linelist and confirmation dates are sourced from Global.health: Hondius hantavirus 2026 outbreak data [2026-06-22] .
